This week's title , Remembrance is chosen by Chef E , in honor of someone in the family that has passed on. I wanted to share the pictures of my late younger sister and brother who passed away at the age of 12 and 21 but I couldn't find a decent photos of them in my home. My mom would have plenty of them in her house but I didn't have time to go over. So I choose to honor the people who died so that we could live, the war veterans.
For being the defender against the common enemy, the fallen heroes are always the first family to the nation.
The Cenotaph was built in memory of the 124 British soldiers born or resident in Singapore who gave their lives in World War I (1914–1918), with a second dedication (but no names) added in remembrance of those who died in World War II (1941–1945).
Some of the names inscribed there, could be someone's ancestor out there.
There is another war memorial very near this, in memory of the civilians killed and massacred during the Japanese occupation during the World War II, which I didn't take any photos of but I did take some shots of the Lim Bo Seng Memorial which is about 50 meters away from the Cenotaph.
During the Second Sino-Japanese war, Lim Bo Seng participated actively in activities organised by the Nanyang Federation to boycott Japanese goods and raise funds for the Chinese army.
On 11 February, Lim left Singapore and travelled to Sumatra with other Chinese community leaders and made his way to India later. He recruited and trained hundreds of secret agents through intensive military intelligence missions from China and India. He set up the Sino-British guerrilla task force ,Force 136 in mid-1942 together with Captain John Davis.
He was captured by the Japanese forces in 1944 in Malaya, where he died while in detention and his body was buried there in an unmarked spot. His widow who was informed of his death only after the war, travelled from Singapore and brought his remains back and reburied him near McRichie Reservoir with full military honour.
The pagoda like memorial was unveiled on 29 June, 1954, in Lim's memory.

When I was living in Singapore, in NTU off Jln Bahar, we were very near to the cemeteries. My foreign visitors from UK, NZ, Australia and USA like to visit the Kranji memorial. I like to walk along the thousands of graves and read the headstones of those who died so we can live. Some of them were so young.
This is a lovely tribute to remember those before us who sacrificed so much.
Thank you for posting such a powerful memorial.
Dear Ann this was a powerful memorial. Your descriptions and narrative make those place so real to me and I appreciate you for that. It is a lovely tribute.

Great tribute, and we can use our imagination with your siblings, I know first hand of the loss. My mother also told us we lost a brother before my middle brother was born, so that was my first memory of the term 'loss'...
I am glad we have the memorials to keep them alive in our hearts!
