I remember Noni fruits became very popular. My SIL in Johor grew them, then it became umpopular again. MySIL chopped the tree off for the same reasons as your fire ants.
When you go to NTU, don't walk on the grass opposite Yunnan gardens. Once my daughter was bitten so badly by ants, not the red ones, but giant black ones.
