P is for Pamelo
Larger than a grapefruit, the pomelo is also sweet, with a very thick skin. In fact, the grapefruit is the result of a pomelo-orange cross, as the tangelo is the result of a tangerine-pomelo cross. The fruit has a pear like shape, but is far larger. It can be close to 12 inches (30 cm) across at its widest point and weigh up to 22 pounds (about 10 kg).
The pomelo has a light green rind that becomes slightly yellow when fully ripe. The interior of the fruit is a coral pink when ripe. Pomelo trees prosper best in tropical or near tropical climates, so there are few pomelos far north of the equator. Some pomelos have been grown successfully in the relatively mild climates of San Diego, California and parts of Florida.
Americans are far more familiar with the grapefruit than the pomelo, but should be aware that the grapefruit derives from it. This is important because some medications have warnings about consuming grapefruit. Most notably, those who use carbamazepine, brand name Tegratol, a common medicine for those with seizures or manic depression, should probably not eat pomelos or drink their juice, as it may interfere with synthesis of their medication.

My daughters neighbor has a tree in their front yard. I had never seen them before but took a picture and showed it to a friend, who told me what it was...beautiful outside and inside. Good "P"
Wonderful photos! I've heard of them, but hadn't seen one - looks delicious.
We are much too far north for these delicious looking fruits, - great photos and a good choice for P.
I have never heard of the pomelo, but I think it is a very nice and delicious fruit. Thanks for your visit!
Lucky you, to have seen a real platypus! We didn't!
Fantastic shots of your pomelo, great take on the theme. Pomelo is the Spanish word for grapefruit, I didn't know about those crossings!!
P is for palm tree
Great informative post. I too was ignorant of this fruit. However, I did know about grapefruit and certain medications. A friend who is on a statin (for cholesterol) cannot ingest grapefruit.

This post was soooo interesting, Jama. I had never heard of a pamelo, bit grapefruits and tangelos are quite common here.
Oh! I had one once, but had forgotten about it! VERY thick skin, if I remember rightly, but quite a nice taste!
Happy to know this fruit is sweet. I always give up eating this during Mooncake Festival, thinking it is sour and bitter.
