W is for Wedelia Trilobata or commonly known as the Creeping Daisy.

Wedelia trilobata is native to the northern part of South America and the West Indies. It is a creeping evergreen perennial that roots at the leaf nodes and spreads widely. The leaves are ovate and usually 3 lobed. The flower is a yellow daisy-like flower that is approximately 1 inch across. The plant makes an excellent groundcover as well as a great hanging basket.

Grows best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil, but does fine in poor soil as well. Quite adaptable in tropical climates.

The plant has use in traditional medicine: crushed leaves are used as a poultice; tea is given to alleviate symptoms of colds and flu; and it is used in combination with other herbs to clear the placenta after birth.

Farm animals have aborted fetuses after grazing on Wedelia.

Friday My Town Shoot Out : My town dressed for Christmas

To feel the Christmasy feeling, one just need to hit the malls, most of them are beautifully decorated as early as in November. These photos are taken along the major shopping belt here in Singapore call the Orchard Road. Every year, the whole street will be brightly decorated till the the beginning of the new year.

The lights stretched from Orchard Road to New Bridge Road, the road will be congested nightly with traffic slowly passing through and the pedestrian walkway packed with people gawking.

Every mall there have different theme.

The latest shopping mall opened recently, the Ion.

This week's theme chosen by Carly is Holiday Decorations. Not necessary decorations we have at home, it can be around the neighbourhood.

Being a Muslim, there's no major celebrations this month, so I decided to showcase Christmas Decorations around the Shopping Centres here. Almost all malls have their own special and unique decorations put up to attract customers.

A trip to the major shopping belt is Singapore is a must for everybody during the Christmas season, not only to shop but to gawk at the yearly Christmas light up.

A six- storey high Christmas Tree just outside Ion Orchard, the newest mall in the famous shopping belt.
It's no ordinary tree, you can actually step inside the tree and be dazzled by a multi-sensory experience of glittering stars, lights, and baubles.

All lighted up at night, and it's so beatiful.

More decoration found inside another mall nearby. Every mall has their Christmas decorations up as early as in November. There's a contest of the best decorated building in Orchard Road and it's a yearly affair. I wonder which mall will be declared the winner this year?

I don't know who got the first shock, the snake or me....we both crossed our path on a quiet park near my neighborhood. I've been there many times and this is the first time I've come across this little snake.It only stayed for a moment before it slithered quickly into the bushes. My son who was with me said it's just a harmless garden snake but it's definitely an undesirable animal in my book!

Friday My Town Shoot Out : Weather

Being in a tropical island, we only have 2 weather, mostly it's sunny/ cloudy days with occasional rain.

When it's hot and humid day like this, time to go to the beach or pool. This was taken at Jurong East Swimming Complex, it has a waved pool minus the sand.

One rainy afternoon at Clark Quay, otherwise this place is never deserted, there's always people walking by the river.

Minutes after this photo was taken, heavy rain fell.

Snow in Singapore?

Fat chance! it's only artificially snow, well actually just suds.....but the kids seem not to mind. Usually around December, this mall nearest to my home will have this big Christmas tree just outside it's entrance with the artificial snow blowing at certain time of the day.

Well, this is the closest we get to a white Christmas being in a tropical country and no one's complaining, except may be the cleaning crew, more works for them to clear the 'snow' to make that passageway safe to walk.

2 avid photographers trying to photograph some birds at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserved.

Opened in 1993, this 87 hectare wetland refuge is of supreme importance during the migration of waders and shorebirds between the summer breeding grounds of North Asia (Siberia, China etc.) and the wintering grounds of the Southern Hemisphere (Australia etc.). This migration route is the East-Asian Flyway.

The migratory birds are attracted by exposed mud flats in the long-abandoned prawn ponds. Water levels in the prawn ponds are still controlled by sluice gates; the aim is to maintain some exposed mud flats at all times, even during high tide, thereby attracting waders and shorebirds. In addition to tidal systems there are a small number of freshwater ponds and patches of secondary forest which add to the reserve's biodiversity.

On 10 November, 2001, National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan announced that Sungei Buloh would be one of two parks to be gazetted as Nature Reserves. On 1 Jan 2002, 130-ha of Sungei Buloh was officially gazetted as a nature reserve and renamed as Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to better reflect its status.

In the same year, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve was recognized as a site of international importance for migratory birds with Wetlands International presenting the reserve a
certificate to mark its formal entry into the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network, which include Australia's Kakadu National Park, China's Mai Po and Japan's Yatsu Tidal Flats. Sungei Buloh became Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003.

Friday My Town Shoot Out: A few of my favorite things

Too many favorite things in my life right now but I'm not going to bore you with too many photos.....

My all time favorite, Cadbury Chocolate Milk bar. No other chocolate taste as good as Cadbury to me!

Most favorite macro shot at the moment, taken at a park near my place just a few weeks ago. Thanks to the co operation of this beautiful little dragonfly.

I can never resist taking photos of beautiful flowers, especially roses.

My one and only niece ( My brother's daughter), she's always one willing model for me. She's only 7 years old and bears a little resemblance to me when I was a child, and have an uncanny similar characteristic to my younger son who's already 21 years old this year.

Mini oranges, I could them everyday!

I love photographing the little beauty of nature, which most of the time we tend to take them for granted. Take time out to smell the roses, and enjoy the quietness of the early morning, watching the sun goes up, and immersed in their natural beauty.....which makes whatever problems we have at hand seem insignificance. One need a positive and clear mind to charter the next step in life. Enjoy life while it last and never live a life of regret.

T is for TARANTULA:

Tarantulas are very large spiders belonging mainly to the family Theraphosidae. Some genre of tarantula hunt prey primarily in trees; others hunt on or near the ground. All tarantulas can produce silk—while arboreal species will typically reside in a silken "tube tent", terrestrial species will line their burrows with silk to stabilize the burrow wall and facilitate climbing up and down. Tarantulas mainly eat insects and other arthropods, using ambush as their primary method of prey capture. The biggest tarantulas can kill animals as large as lizards, mice and birds. Tarantulas are found in tropical and desert regions around the world. Most tarantulas are harmless to humans, and some species are popular in the exotic pet trade. Some species, while not known to have ever produced human fatalities, have venom that can produce extreme discomfort over a period of several days.

As early as November, Christmas decorations are already being seen around the malls here in Singapore. This one was taken at Changi Airport terminal 1, pillars are being wrapped in big ribbons.
