" Delicate: Show us the delicate side of town! The dancers, the flowers, architectural ornaments..that is our subject this week. "

On Sunday, I went to Sentosa Island for the annual flower show to welcome the Chinese New Year. Thousands of flowers blooming , with several animals from the Chinese zodiac were also being displayed, made entirely of flowers- very DELICATE works involved using the DELICATE Chrysanthemums and Carnations.

This is the year of the dragon- the animal is associated with good luck, longevity and wisdom. The symbol in between the dragons is the logo of the Resort World Sentosa.

And of course no garden would be completed without the beautiful butterflies with their DELICATE wings, too DELICATE, they are prone to being torn!

Chinese Paper Cutting or Jianzhi - the cut outs are used to decorate doors and windows during the Chinese New Year which fell on the 23rd and 24th January.

There are two methods of manufacture: one use scissors, the other use knives. In the scissor method, several pieces of paper — up to eight — are fastened together. The motif is then cut with sharp, pointed scissors.

Knife cuttings are fashioned by putting several layers of paper on a relatively soft foundation consisting of a mixture of tallow and ashes. Following a pattern, the artist cuts the motif into the paper with a sharp knife which is usually held vertically. Skilled crafters can even cut out different drawings freely without stopping. Very intricate process and DELICATE outcome!

Glass: Interesting Windows, Unique Displays, Beautiful Collections...what glassy things can you find to share from your town?

A glass bowl that have been with me for almost 33 years, it was a wedding gift from a relative.

I love this shot , the reflection of a street can be seen on one side of the glass window while what's being sold in the shop is clearly seen on another side.

ION Orchard, a very famous mall with glass exterior including the roof of the porch. The small glass enclosure on street level is the entry to the Mass Rapid Transit train which runs underground.

A cavernous glass dome on the enormous construction site of the Gardens by the Bay is set to become Singapore's newest tourist attraction. The 1.2ha dome - slightly larger than the size of two football fields - is 38m high, and its interior is cooled to temperatures of between 17 deg C and 25 deg C. It is slated to become 'the crown jewel of the downtown Marina Bay'.
This replicates the cool-dry climate of the Mediterranean and semi-arid subtropical regions such as South Africa and parts of Europe, and will house a variety of plants, ranging from olive and bottle trees to tulips and grape vines. The dome was open to visitors for the first time during the World Orchid Conference in November. Its official opening will be in June 2012, together with the Bay South Gardens, one of the Gardens by the Bay's three parts. It takes approximately 6 months for the plants to mature and settle into their new environment.

The two conservatories were designed with environmental sustainability in mind, applying cutting-edge technologies that provide energy-efficient solutions in cooling. The facade of the 1.2-hectare Flower Dome is made up of 3,300 special glass panels, which let in the sunlight while keeping the heat out. This allows the conservatory to mimic the cool-dry climate of the Mediterranean. To ensure energy efficiency, only areas occupied by plants and visitors will be cooled.

The conservatory is divided into smaller gardens featuring plants such as poppy flowers from California and Cat's Paw plants from Australia. One of the gardens - the Flower Field - will have changing displays including tulips and lavender. The conservatory will also have an event space which can be rented out for weddings and other functions. There will also be two restaurants within the conservatory - one serving Mediterranean cuisine and the other, Chinese.

Tired legs walking on a railway track, not an easy walk! The track was finally removed a few months ago when the trains from Malaysia stop coming in to town and only stop at a station nearer to the border.

Zooming effect in photography.

To get this effect , set your shutter speed to be a longer exposure and while taking the shot (between when the shutter opens and closes) either zoom in our out from your subject.

That is the basics of it but in reality getting a good zoom effect takes a lot of practice and experimentation with a bit of luck.

An automated external defibrillator or AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layman, and the use of AEDs is taught in many first aid, first responder, and basic life support (BLS) level CPR classes.

There's so many places to go in Singapore to enjoy a night of music and booze, but I don't patronize these establishments so I'm going to showcase where free music are available to the public.

I'm sure this place will be packed during night time with patrons, I walked passed this place in the day at Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

It sure will rock the house down when the musicians and singers came in later in the night!

"December 30-END. The end of another year. What is your better memory from this year? or how do you celebrate the end of a year."

The end of the day yesterday, we have been having too many cloudy and rainy days, it's been a while since the last we had such a gorgeous sunset. This is viewed from my 13th floor apartment.

What does 2011 best remembered for me?

Early this year I decided to upgrade to DSLR from a prosumer camera and bought a Pentax Kr , been having too much fun trying and learning photography. Just last week, Rebecca of Dusty Cellar shared some tips on lights photography and I managed to find some time to go to town to try it out.

First wedding photography in April, the groom is my sister in law's cousin.

The first macro photography with Pentax, in January.

Here are some of the short vacations across the causeway to Malaysia with the family..

Genting in early December.

A kelong in Johore in September, where the cousins, brother, sister in law, nephew , niece, and uncle fish from the moment we reach there. I was busy photographing than fishing, and managed to go to a deserted island nearby for some swim.

There will be a great celebrations to usher in the new year around the Marina Bay, with music and fireworks at midnight, but I think I will just stay at home and enjoy the quiet moment reflecting upon myself. There will definitely be too many people out celebrating, too crowded for me!

Eichhornia Crassipes: commonly known as Common Water Hyacinth, is an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and is often considered a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range.

Its habitat ranges from tropical desert to subtropical or warm temperate desert to rainforest zones. It does not tolerate water temperatures >34°C. Leaves are killed by frost and salt water, the latter trait being used to kill some of it by floating rafts of the cut weed to the sea.

Water hyacinths do not grow when the average salinity is greater than 15% that of sea water. In brackish water, its leaves show epinasty and chlorosis, and eventually die.

It is a subtropical, soft-stemmed evergreen shrub between 36 and 48 inches (90 and 120 cm) tall. The zygomorphic, long-throated, short-lived white flowers emerge sequentially from overlapping bright yellow bracts on racemes that are produced throughout the warm months. It is a popular landscape plant in tropical and subtropical areas of the world.

"December has a ton of holidays, and ready or not, HERE COME THE HOLIDAYS! So, show me what you have to do to get ready for them. For this assignment, I don't want to see decorations, I want to see the boxes that they are stored in. I want to see someone up on a ladder hanging decorative lights. I want to see a parks and recreations staff putting a Christmas tree in place, or hanging holiday banners on street lamps. Let's see all the work that goes into making the HOLIDAYS sparkle!

Extra Credit: BOWS. It's a simple one this week for the Extra Credit portion of the assignment. Show me BOWS. Any color, any style, I just want to see some pretty BOWS."

Unfortunately I don't celebrate Christmas, so no photos of all the works of hanging all the Christmas decorations, plus malls here already put up the decorations as early as in November so no chance of any such photos too. Christmas are celebrated in a big way by the malls here, the whole stretch of our main popular shopping belt, Orchard Road, are brightly lit with all kind of lights and decorations. Shopping centers everywhere have their own deco too, with free short musical shows to entice more shoppers.

I don't have any lawn tools since I'm staying in a high rise apartment without a garden or lawn to take care off, so I have to look around at what the workers from the Town Council and National Parks Board use in their daily task of caring and cleaning of our parks and lawns.

Singapore Botanic Garden, with the recent opening of the Mass Rapit Transit train just outside the garden's Bukit Timah Entrance, it's much easier to visit it for a casual walk among the greeneries there.

Q is for QUEENSTOWN , one of the early Housing estates with high rise buildings built by the government to replace the traditional houses for our growing citizens. Developed around the year of Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1952, Queenstown became the first satellite town in Singapore. Sadly to say this derelict bowling alley is due for demolition soon but the there's so much changes was done to the town, with so many newer building gone up in place of old ones.

The bananas were harvested by a friend of the husband when he went to clear a pot of land for development. The bananas were still green and unripe which we kept for a few days until they ripen.

Henna design, it takes someone very creative to produce such gorgeous designs.

I love photographing the creepy crawlies as long as they stay still and do not crawl to me. I used to be very squeamish about these little creatures until the sons came into my life. One of them was into insects, bugs....and would always bring some creepy crawlies home in a little bottle, in the pretense of studying them!

Whenever he tag along on my photo outing, he would be on the look-out for the creepy crawlies/ insects to be my model .

Another pretty catterpiller which I rather leave it alone after photographing..love it's gorgeous patterns on it's body, wonder what kind of butterfly will emerged from it?

While the son BORROWed my camera on an outing to the Botanic Gardens, I have to satisfy myself with my handphone's camera. At 8 megapixels, it produced good photos!
